When looking for durability of a hardwood floor, a number of factors have to be taken into account. Such as the species of the type of wood used, the manufacturing process, the finish and so on. While most wood floors will have a basic durability to most types of uses, it’s good to know what type of hardwood flooring on Long Island works best for a particular situation.

Now before we speak about the different types of wood flooring that’s available, we’re going to have to get a little scientific year and even a bit more nerdy. What I’m referring to is the Janka hardness scale. The “Janka hardness“ what! Yeah I know. The term sounds like a reading for adult movies. What it is, is what the name implies. it is a scale that helps to determine the hardness and durability of a particular hardwood flooring component.

The higher the rating on the Janka scale, the more punishment they can take. The scale goes up to 4000, but I do not believe any wood flooring goes that high. The highest one that I know of is Brazilian walnut which has a janka score of 3684. Now, that kind of wood may be nice, but I do not know of too many people who will put down the count for that kind of hardwood flooring on Long lsland.

Now there’s always discussion of the durability between engineered wood and natural wood. First let’s talk about engineered hardwood. Where is definitely wins is its ability to resist moisture. So if you live in an area that has high humidity, this may be an option. Engineered hardwood is also more durable than solid words that are lower on the Janka scale.

What it comes down to is how much money are you willing to spend on a floor that is durable and gives you the look that you want. One thing about hardwood flooring on Long Island is that it can be repaired again and again. This helps to increase its longevity which in turn affects its durability. This is something definitely a homeowner, business owner and facility manager need to consider as far as the total cost of ownership to be considered.
